A beauty school in the US is being run by a Muslim couple who have adopted the name of the Islamic State group (IS).
The school, which has more than 50 students from different backgrounds and religions, has attracted controversy as its pupils are indoctrinated in Islamic beliefs, including that all Muslims are under IS control.
“We are trying to educate the children that we’re a community and not an isolated group, and it’s not going to be a safe place for them,” one of the founders, Mohammad Al-Shahid, told the New York Times.
“They’re not allowed to go outside and eat.
They are taught that if they go outside that they are committing a sin.”
The Islamic school, known as The Islamic Beauty School, has also reportedly closed down the local police force, after a complaint by a parent.
Al-Masry Al-Youm newspaper, the country’s largest newspaper, said the two brothers had recently been given the “license” to operate their school by the local council, despite not having a license in the city of Fayetteville, which is within the IS-controlled areas.
“The Islamic Beauty school, where the school is located, has been registered under the jurisdiction of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department, but has not yet received a license from Fayette City Council,” the newspaper said.
“It was the Islamic Beauty’s owners who made the decision to take this step in order to safeguard the school’s safety.”
The school has also been under scrutiny from the US government, with a spokesperson for the Department of Education saying that the Department had “not received any formal request for approval”.
The school is currently open for business, according to the Times, but will not reopen until the Department can provide assurances that students are not indoctrinated.
The New York Daily News reported that the owners of the school had been detained by local authorities in Fayette, Arkansas, after the family reported them to local authorities.
“This has nothing to do with a religious belief.
They have been arrested on various charges,” a spokesman for the sheriff said.
